Why rice, heat and compressed air are wrong for a wet phone

Panic advice often sounds active, but aggressive drying can create new damage. Modern manufacturer guidance is much simpler.

Rice is not a controlled drying method

Dry rice does not make direct contact with liquid trapped behind a grille, seal or connector. It can also leave dust and small particles around openings.

Apple specifically warns against placing an iPhone in rice because particles could damage it.

Heat can damage more than water

Hair dryers, heaters, ovens and direct high heat can affect adhesives, seals, displays and batteries. Heat can also move moisture rather than safely remove it.

Use room-temperature airflow instead of trying to accelerate the process with extreme temperature.

Compressed air can push liquid inward

A strong jet directed at a connector, microphone or speaker grille can drive liquid and debris deeper. The same concern applies to inserting cotton swabs, paper or tools.

Wipe only the exterior and keep the relevant opening facing down.

Use the safer sequence

Disconnect cables, remove the case, wipe the exterior, orient openings downward and leave the device in a dry ventilated area. Follow any on-screen liquid alert and the manufacturer’s support instructions.

A water-eject sound has a limited role for the loudspeaker grille only. It does not replace drying time or professional service after serious exposure.
