Laboratory resistance has conditions
Manufacturers publish water-resistance claims for specified depths, durations and test conditions. Those conditions do not cover every shower jet, ocean wave, hot tub, drink or cleaning chemical.
Pressure and moving water can challenge seals differently from still laboratory water.
Resistance can decrease
Drops, cracks, repairs and ordinary wear can affect seals. Apple notes that splash, water and dust resistance are not permanent conditions.
Do not rely on an old rating to justify charging or continued use while a device may be wet.
Liquid type changes the risk
Saltwater can promote corrosion. Soap can lower surface tension and move through openings differently. Sugary drinks can leave sticky residue after evaporation.
Rinse or cleaning instructions vary by model and liquid; use the manufacturer’s exact guidance rather than a universal internet trick.
After exposure, symptoms still matter
Disconnect wired power, wipe the exterior and allow drying. Use a speaker sound only if the phone is otherwise safe and the symptom is limited to muffled loudspeaker audio.
Heat, power instability, display changes, battery swelling or persistent distortion needs service regardless of the original IP rating.
