How to get water out of a phone speaker safely

Unplug the phone, dry the outside and point the speaker down. If the phone is otherwise working normally, one water-eject sound cycle may help move droplets near the grille. Let it rest, then check ordinary speech.

Before playing: unplug the charger, disconnect Bluetooth and point the affected speaker down. Start at moderate volume. If the phone is hot, swollen or malfunctioning, stop using it and seek service.

Stop immediately if the phone becomes hot, the sound distorts, or the device swells. This cannot dry a charging port or internal liquid.

First minute: remove power and accessories

Unplug the phone and remove wired accessories. Take off the case so liquid is not held against an opening. Wipe the exterior with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth; do not push cloth or paper into the grille or connector.

If the phone was deeply submerged, exposed to a non-water liquid or behaving abnormally, switch it off when safe and move directly to professional advice.

Position the affected speaker

Find the speaker that sounds muffled. On many phones the main loudspeaker is along the lower edge, but holes can also be microphones. Hold the likely speaker opening downward over a dry cloth and let gravity work.

Do not shake the phone hard. Do not use a hair dryer, oven, compressed air or vacuum nozzle. Force and heat can move liquid farther, damage seals or stress the battery.

Run one controlled speaker-cleaner cycle

Disconnect Bluetooth so the sound comes from the wet phone. Begin at a moderate device volume and increase only while playback stays clean. Run the full nBeats water-eject master once with the speaker facing down.

After playback, leave the phone in a dry, ventilated area. Sound can assist the speaker opening; time and airflow remain important for moisture elsewhere.

Understand why the speaker may improve

The nBeats player sends an audio signal to your phone’s loudspeaker. Its diaphragm moves back and forth, changing the air pressure close to the opening. That local movement may disturb a droplet and help it leave the grille. Results depend on the speaker, the liquid’s location and the device’s condition.

The 2024 Verge investigation, with iFixit, observed an early burst of droplets from the speakers of four tested phones. Liquid could remain elsewhere, and the tests were not a controlled comparison of every device. This supports a limited speaker-grille effect; it does not certify today’s nBeats browser profiles or prove that a phone is repaired.

Choose the instructions for your phone

Use the same preparation and stop conditions whichever phone you own. Selecting a model loads its assigned audio file; it does not establish that the file has been independently proven superior for that model.

  • iPhone: identify whether media playback or the call earpiece is muffled. Choose your iPhone on the device page. A USB-C or Lightning liquid alert needs Apple’s separate connector-drying guidance.
  • Samsung Galaxy: choose your Galaxy series for speaker playback. A moisture warning concerns the USB connector; playing a tone cannot clear the sensor or make charging safe.
  • Other Android phones: select your brand or model, verify that audio is routed to the built-in speaker and follow that manufacturer’s drying instructions. If your phone was submerged or is behaving abnormally, seek support before running tones.

What the sound cannot remove

A speaker-cleaner sound may move nearby droplets. It cannot clear a wet charging port, dry the phone’s internal electronics, remove corrosion or repair a damaged speaker. Clearer sound after playback is an observation about audio, not a dryness test.

Salt, sugar and soap can leave residue when the water evaporates. Treat sea water, drinks and soapy bathwater as a reason to follow manufacturer cleaning or service guidance. Do not assume that a clearer speaker means the residue is gone.

Retest and decide

Use a spoken podcast, voice note or the nBeats speaker test at moderate volume. Clear improvement supports the idea that a grille-level droplet was involved. No improvement, persistent crackling or silence may indicate blockage or hardware damage.

Do not reconnect a charging cable simply because audio improved. A liquid-detection or moisture warning must be resolved separately.
