How to run a left and right speaker test correctly

A left-right test answers a routing question: does the expected channel reach the expected side? It does not measure perfect loudness matching.

Prepare the listening path

Disable spatial effects temporarily, centre the balance control and confirm both earbuds or cable connectors are seated. Set volume using normal audio before the channel cues begin.

For laptop speakers, place the device directly in front of you on a stable surface.

Listen for location before loudness

The left cue should appear only or mainly on the left, and the right cue on the right. Reversed channels can come from swapped speakers, cables, software routing or wearing earbuds on the wrong sides.

A small loudness difference may be fit or hearing. Repeat after swapping physical sides or using another source.

Trace a quiet channel

If one side is quiet, check balance, battery, mesh blockage and Bluetooth connection. Test the same headphones on another device. If the quiet side follows the hardware, the hardware is more likely involved.

If the quiet side stays on the same channel after swapping headphones, inspect the source settings or app.

Know what the test cannot tell you

It cannot certify frequency response, noise cancellation, microphone quality or hearing. It also cannot dry wet earbuds.

Persistent silence, crackling or battery problems should be handled through the manufacturer’s troubleshooting or service process.
