Dropped AirPods in Water?
Here is the Fix.

Did your AirPods go through the washing machine? Is the sound muffled or crackling? Don’t panicโ€”follow these 4 steps to eject the liquid immediately.

It happens to the best of us. You forget to check your pockets, and your expensive AirPods take a swim in the washing machine. Or maybe one fell into the sink while you were brushing your teeth.

The Symptom: You put them in your ears, but the bass is gone, the volume is low, or you hear a weird “static” noise.

โš ๏ธ The “Short Circuit” Warning

Do not put them back in the charging case yet!
If the AirPods are wet, putting them in the case can short-circuit the charging pins, destroying both the buds and the case. Dry them first.

Fix 1: The “Bass Eject” Method

The Apple Watch has a built-in feature to eject water. AirPods do not. However, you can simulate this feature using our website.

By playing a high-amplitude, low-frequency sound (165Hz) through the AirPods, the speakers vibrate violently enough to push water out of the mesh.

How to do it:

  1. Connect: Make sure your AirPods are connected to your phone via Bluetooth.
  2. Max Volume: Turn the volume up to 100%.
  3. The Hold: Hold the AirPod by the stem, with the main speaker grill facing down (towards the floor).
  4. Activate: Use the Fix Phone Speaker Tool on this page.
  5. Watch: You will actually see tiny droplets being sprayed out of the mesh. Keep playing until the water stops.

Fix 2: The Gravity Spin

Sometimes sound isn’t enough for deep water logging. You need physics.

The Technique:
Grab the AirPod by the “stem” (the long part). Hold it tightly. Flick your wrist sharply downward, like you are trying to shake the last drop of ink out of a pen.

“Centrifugal force pushes the heavy water to the furthest point (the speaker grill) and forces it out. Do this 10-15 times over a paper towel.”

Fix 3: The Drying Box

If they are still muffled after ejection, moisture is trapped in the internal membrane. You need a desiccant.

Forget Rice. Rice dust will get into the fine mesh of the AirPods and block it permanently.

Best: Silica Gel

Collect those little “Do Not Eat” packets from shoe boxes. Put them in a ziplock bag with your AirPods for 24 hours.

Okay: Air Drying

Place them on a windowsill with sunlight (not direct scorching heat) and good airflow for 48 hours.

Own AirPods Pro? Read This.

AirPods Pro have Silicone Ear Tips. Water gets trapped behind these tips, creating a seal that holds water against the speaker driver.

Mandatory Step:

Remove the silicone tips immediately. Dry the tips separately with a cloth. If you don’t remove them, the water will sit there for days and corrode the metal grill.

AirPods Water FAQ

Are AirPods waterproof?

No. AirPods Pro and Gen 3 are Water Resistant (IPX4), meaning they can handle sweat or light rain. They are NOT waterproof and cannot survive submersion in a pool or washing machine without quick action.

Why is one AirPod quieter than the other?

This is a classic sign of water logging. The water is weighing down the speaker cone on one side. Use the “Bass Eject” method on that specific AirPod to balance them out.

Does the warranty cover water damage?

Standard Apple Warranty does not cover water damage. Unless you have AppleCare+, a replacement will cost you about $89 per earbud. That is why it is worth trying to fix them yourself first.

Connect your AirPods and run the tool now.
